Chapter Eleven

James stood outside the bathroom, trying to squelch the desire to pace. He wasn’t quite sure what had happened on the dance floor, but from Paige’s expression and the panic in her voice, something wasn’t right.

Had he said something wrong? He replayed their conversation in his mind. Except for the fact that she scolded him for talking business with Hank and his friends, they really hadn’t talked about much.

Could it be that she was upset with the fact that she was trying to help him find what he truly wanted to do, but he kept messing up by talking about the exact thing he was attempting to get away from?

He ran his hands through his hair. That must be it. Wow. He was such a jerk. She was giving of her time and he wasn’t giving his full attention. He would tell her he was going to get serious if he could. But she’d barricaded herself in the bathroom.

A woman with short white hair walked by. When she veered right to head into the bathroom, he reached out his hand and caught her by the elbow.

“Can you see if Paige is in there?”

The woman stared at him through her spectacles. “Paige?”

“Paige Williams.”

She nodded her head. “Sure, sweetie.” She started walking into the bathroom but then paused. “Are you sure she wants you to know what she’s doing in there?”

For the first time the thought of Paige having digestive distress raced through his mind. “Um. Well . . .”

The woman raised her hand. “I’ll use discretion,” she said as she disappeared into the bathroom.

He heard muffled voices from inside. Not wanting to embarrass Paige, he kept far enough away so as not to overhear any incriminating information.

A voice that sounded like Paige grew louder as she burst from the doorway. Her face was bright red. When she turned to see James, it grew redder—if that were possible.

“I am not sick,” she said as she brushed her skirt down. “Did you tell her I was having GI distress?”

James opened his lips, but nothing came out. This evening had taken a strange turn. He shook his head. “I didn’t. I swear.”

Paige leaned against the wall as she stared at him. “Well, Mrs. Gorton seemed to think I was. Started offering me all sorts of pills she had stashed in her purse.” Paige narrowed her eyes as she glanced around. “I doubt any of those were for intestinal issues.”

James just smiled. It was good to see that Paige was back to her normal self. “So, if that wasn’t it, why did you leave like that?” His skin burned at the memory of holding her so close. As he eyed her, he doubted that she would even tell him the truth. And if he were honest, he didn’t want to know the truth either.

“I just got a bit warm,” she said, offering him a small smile. It was something he was all too familiar with. It was the type of smile you give someone when you’re trying to hide something.
